Eight Principles of Pilates



The eight main Pilates principles were extracted from Joseph Pilates' original work. Because of this, the order, specific words, and even the total number of principles can vary from teacher to teacher. Nevertheless, there are eight basic principles that are widely used today. These principles, are:

  • Concentration

  • Control

  • Centering

  • Precision

  • Breathing

  • Flow

  • Integrated isolation

  • Routine

 Keep these principles in mind as you practice Pilates for an efficient workout and lasting results.



 

Joseph Pilates
1880-1967

The Pilates Method of body conditioning was first conceived by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s; later, in the 1940s, it became popular with dancers and people in the performing arts. In contemporary times, its emphasis on the mind-body connection has awakened a renewed interest in this type of fitness training among people from all walks of life.
